Advantage Tamil Nadu: Karthik hits ton against Orissa

Arun Karthik scored a century and compiled 103 runs for the unfinished sixth wicket with C Ganapathy to carry Group ‘A’ leaders Tamil Nadu to 323 for five on the opening day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Super League match against host Orissa at Veer Surendra Sai Stadium in Sambalpur today. Coming to bat at No 3 position, Karthik hit 16 boundaries in his 230-ball knock of 118. When stumps were drawn for the day, Ganapathy was giving solid support to Karthik with an unconquered 54, which included three hits to the fence and three over it. Earlier electing to bat, Tamil Nadu lost opener Abhinav Mukund cheaply. But other opener S Anirudh’s half-century (53) steadied the innings. Anirudh faced 70 balls and hit seven fours and a six. Tamil Nadu skipper Dinesh Karthis, however, disappointed the local crowd, getting dismissed for one. Orissa’s bowling attack could not lived up to its potential due to last minute pull out of seamer Basant Mohanty because of stomach upset. But pace spearhead Debasis Mohanty and left-arm spinner Dhiraj Singh did their best, bagging two wickets each. Tamil Nadu opener Mukund was reprimanded by match referee Sumit Dutta for for showing dissent and displeasure after being given out. ‘‘After being given out, you were in the crease and showed dissent against umprire’s decision. You are violating the code of conduct (Level-I, under clause 1.3). This is an official reprimand for violating the above clause,’’ said the match referee’s letter to Mukund.
